Winner — Environment Photographer of the Year
First Place — the Natural Environment

Canadian photographer Irene Suchocki has been named Environment Photographer of the Year 2007, having taken first place in the Natural Environment category with her photograph of a rock formation in Canada. The photographer titled it "The Face of Nature" and said "The Hopewell Rocks are situated on a portion of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, which has some of the highest tides in the world. The tides apparently travel at 6 to 8 vertical feet per hour. I took this photograph on the floor of the bay at low tide. The 'flowerpot rocks' have been sculpted by the water over the ages, resulting in a surreal landscape. In fact, my alternate title for this photograph was 'Nature is a Surrealist Artist.' This particular rock especially fascinated me and it took me a while to realize why and to see the profile of a face." Please see www.irenesuchocki.com for more information on the photography of Irene Suchocki.

First Place — the Agricultural Environment

Scottish photographer Alistair Sinclair took first place in the Agricultural Environment category with his photograph of tree farming. "The photo was taken at the tail end of what had been an uneventful and disappointing autumnal day's shooting, due mainly to the persistent rain and a dull sky," said the photographer. "I often travel down this single track road on the edge of a conservation marshland, which supports a wide range of wildlife (few of whom were about that afternoon). I had been contemplating giving up and heading home for a warm cuppa when suddenly the sun broke through the sky and lit up the recently harvested logs as well as creating the rainbow behind them. I got the camera onto the tripod and took a series of shots — this one is the best of them."

Technical information: Canon EOS 20D camera body, Tamron 18-200 mm lens, tripod, 1/80 second at f/9, ISO 400.

Second Place — the Agricultural Environment

UK photographer Brian Mahler took second place in the Agricultural Environment category with his photograph of a mill stream. "The water of the Tweed is channeled through a gap in the weir producing a really strong, deep flow of water. When you are there you can really feel the power of the water and imagine the mill taking its power from the river, hence the reason I put this in the Agricultural category," said the photographer. "I still visit the mill to capture it in different lights and moods with the river at different levels. This moment was at a time when the level of the river was quite low and concentrated in the cut in the weir, giving the wonderful sinuous form to the water that makes it look so powerful." UK photographer Tania Dolvers took first place in the Industrial Environment category with her photograph of a construction site in London. "One of the construction workers explained that they were in the process of installing the piling foundations for a new building that wouid be built on the site," said the photographer. "It was a lovely crisp, bright morning and the worker seen in the photograph seemed so lost amoungst the debris and heavy machinery and the scale of the piling as it dangled above him." First Place — the Social Environment
Second Place — the Social Environment

UK photographer David Taylor took both first and second place in the Social Environment category with his photographs of urban life in Marrakech. "The images were both shot overlooking the Djemma el Fna market square in Marrakech, Morocco," said the photographer. "My trip to Morocco was my first visit to northern Africa, and Marrakech was an unexpected assault on the senses! The Djemma el Fna is an astonishingly vibrant, bustling place, rich with exotic smells and eye-catching colour. In the early evening the Djemma el Fna is filled with food stalls selling freshly cooked meats and fresh fruits. It was on my first evening in Marrakech that I shot the images from the quiet of a café balcony overlooking the square. From there I was able to set up a camera and tripod to try to capture the exciting scenes of lives being lived that were playing out below me. A slow shutter speed, necessary because of the fading light, meant that the people milling about have become blurs, helping to convey the sense of business and purpose that made such an impression on me." Please see www.davidtaylorphotography.co.uk for more information on the photography of David Taylor.

Technical information: Pentax 67 camera body, 165 mm lens, exposures unknown or unrecorded on Fuji Velvia 50 transparency film.
